Hormonal Balance
Hormones and Your Weight

Hormones contribute to weight gain which creates hormonal
imbalance that slows metabolism and perpetuates the obese
state.  Improper insulin action known as “insulin resistance”
leads to high insulin levels resulting in hunger and weight
gain.  Low thyroid hormone or inefficient processing of thyroid
hormone slows metabolism and causes weight gain.  Low
growth hormone causes reduction in muscle mass and
increased fat mass.  In women, low estrogen levels increase
fat in the belly, but high estrogen levels increase fat in the hips
and buttocks.  Low testosterone in men leads to low muscle
mass and increased fat. High cortisol levels increase fat in the
belly and cause tremendous weight gain.  Leptin, resistin,
adiponectin and other “hunger hormones,” produced by the fat
cell have profound effects on appetite and metabolism.
